People often complain that music is too ambiguous, that what they should think when they hear it is so unclear, whereas everyone understands words. With me, it is exactly the opposite, and not only with regard to an entire speech but also with individual words.

Half the time I feel like I’m appealing to the downer freaks out there. We start to play one downer record after another until I begin to get down myself. Give me something from 1960 or something let me get up again. The music of today is for downer freaks, and I’m an upper.

But recently I began to feel that maybe I wouldn’t be able to do what I want to do and need to do with American musicians, who are imprisoned behind these bars music’s got these bars and measures you know.

Nevertheless the passions, whether violent or not, should never be so expressed as to reach the point of causing disgust and music, even in situations of the greatest horror, should never be painful to the ear but should flatter and charm it, and thereby always remain music.

People who make music together cannot be enemies, at least while the music lasts.

I was growing up listening to Queen. Freddie Mercury threw those incredible melodies into his songs.

The sound and music are 50% of the entertainment in a movie.

Sometimes before we make a record I go back and listen to a few. It’s equally humbling and uplifting.
